Essential sources for development of this key
The key is built using taxonomic descriptions from innumerable sources, which are credited on individual generic or other taxonomic pages. Images are drawn from as many sources again, and should be individually credited.
In addition, some sources were helpful to general key design or to collating taxonomic descriptions.
Previous keys by Pilato and Binda (2010), and Nelson et al. (2009) provided many early “questions”, and images that were used in the pop-up help, as did the online key by Lindahl & Balser (1999).
This key is entirely built around the Actual Checklist of Tardigrada Species, Degma and Guidetti (2025), based on the original checklist (Guidetti and Bertolani 2005) and subsequent notes (Degma and Guidetti 2007). This key uses the 44th edition of the checklist, with the intent to update following any future checklist editions.
Of particular use in checking characters for the key was the chapter on tardigrade taxa by Degma and Guidetti (2018).
